The story of the M1
The M1 project is fascinating for two reasons. Firstly, it is the cornerstone of BMW Motorsport, as well as being the basis of a series of fascinating M Series vehicles, which continue to strongly characterise the identity of BMW today. Secondly, the M1 was developed purely as a racing car and 400 road versions were created from this to enable type approval for group 4.
The history of the M1 begins at the beginning of January 1972 with a phone call from the then BMW sales director Bob Lutz to Jochen Neerpasch, who had been a successful racing director at Ford in Cologne since 1969 …
