The BMW M1 PROCAR Season 1980

The 1980 Procar season had the following changes from 1979:

• BMW sold the rights to the M1 racing series to the “Procar Association”. The cars for the F1 drivers were now built and serviced by the company “B&S Fabrication” in Luton (GB) (owners: Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone).
• the M1 for the qualified F1 pilots got a new design. They were painted white and sported a red stripe design for the first three races. From the 4th round on the Norisring they wore a green stripe design.
• the five best-placed F1 drivers, like all other private drivers, had to qualify with the M1 cars on Friday afternoon. Unlike in the 1979 season, their qualifying times for the GP on Sunday no longer counted.

The following results were produced at the end of the second and final season in the Procar series.

Nelson Piquet dominated the final three races. Together with coming third place in the first half of the season, he was able to secure a clear points lead at the end of the season. Second place winner of the season, Alan Jones was unable to win any of the races, thus he lacked the few decisive points per race necessary to be a threat to Nelson Piquet.

The points for each race were awarded as follows: 20 points for the winner, 15 points for 2nd place, 12 points for 3rd place, 10/4th, 8/5th, 6/6th, 4/7th, 3/8th, 2/9th and 1 point for 10th place.

As the winner of the series, Piquet received a brand new BMW 635CSi, in second place Jones received a BMW 528i and in third place Stuck received a BMW 323i.
